The objective of the Candy Project was to learn about injection molding using the Morgan Press and Haas Mini Mill. Zohar and I decided to create a spinning top. The scale of this design made it easy to produce many tops!

This project covered many molding terms such as sprue, runner, vent, ejector pins, flash, sink, etc. and got me familiar with SW Plastics. Zohar and I implemented draft angles on our final model and utilized a piece of our design as the sprue.

We, unfortunately, broke a tool during the first run and tried to drill the tool out. In the end, we had to square up a new block of aluminum. Everything was smooth sailing after that!

Final Product

This project was particularly special to me because I gifted these spinning tops to students at a school in Guatemala during a Penn EWB service trip. It was incredible to see something I designed, from start to finish, bring so many people joy!
